Obama set to announce troop surge Tuesday; anti-war activists will march Wednesday, protest Saturday

Barack Obama benefitted from widespread anti-war sentiment when he won the 2008 presidential election. Yet, he launched an escalation of the war in Afghanistan soon after taking office. In February 2009, Obama ordered an additional 17,000 combat troops to Afghanistan, more than doubling the size of the U.S. occupation. That deployment raised the level of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to 55,000. This Tuesday, December 2, Obama is expected to announce plans to send 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. Ironically, this announcement will come less than 2 months after Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Twin Cities anti-war activists have planned multiple events in response to the surge. Some plan to watch Obama’s Tuesday evening speech together and hold a press conference immediately afterwards at May Day Books. The group Direct Action to Stop War and Occupation has called for an unpermitted march through the streets of Minneapolis to “stop business as usual” the following day. If Obama makes the announcement as planned on Tuesday evening, activists will gather at 5:30 on Wednesday at the southwest corner of Loring Park. Text “Follow DASWO” to 40404 for Twitter updates.  Critical Mass has been called, and Bringing Sexy Back, "an Autonomous cell of Bash Back!" has a callout for a anti-authoritarian bloc. The Iraq Peace Action Coalition has planned a demonstration for Saturday, December 4 at 1 pm at the intersection of Lake St. and Hiawatha Ave in Minneapolis. [Facebook] Also Saturday, a March and Rally for Trade Justice. Read on for more about the likely impact of the troop surge, the history of U.S. intervention in Afghanistan, and the current reality in a nation referred to as “the place where empires go to die.”

Letter from Leuthold Dairy Farm and M 66-67

I just received today's USPS mail and got this letter from Leuthold Dairy Farm and owner Carol Marie Leuthold. A second letter also from Leuthold is addressed to my wife and step-daughter. WOW, they must have really done some outreach. Then I look at my email and get this message from a friend upstate in Oregon who sends out a warning about this mass mailing which has been delivered to my home in Ashland.

The message from David Delk exposes this campaign to hurt Oregon. I'm forwarding important information below for you to see.

Pickets Protest Election at Honduran Consulate in S. F.

On November 29th, Honduras held elections and the next day Porfirio Lobo was announced as the next president. On the day of the election, a picket was held at the Honduran Consulate in San Francisco; protesters described the elections as a sham organized by a government installed by a military coup. They demanded that there be, "no recognition of the coup regime and its election." Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela, have refused to recognize the vote, and the UN, EU and the Carter Center, had condemned the electoral process as illegitimate and refused to send observers. The US, Peru, Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica and Israel are the only nations to have publicly indicated recognition of the electoral process and future regime.

The Fairview Training Center was once known as the "Oregon State Institution for the Feeble-Minded." During that time, these residents suffered from inadequate staffing, poor training, serious health hazards, restraints, forced sterilization, rape, torture and neglect. Many of the residents were brought to the Center as small children and lived their entire lives in the confines of this prison masking as a hospital.

Although these actions took place in the summer of 2008, the repercussions and trials continue. The outcome of the State versus the People of Minnesota is not yet known. The battles fought between independent journalists and police were the catalyst of what it means to be a citizen journalist in America and how mainstream media portrays your message. What happened here and the outcome of the trials are of the utmost social importance.

Cop Killings and Reasons

Now, I'm not advocating the killing of any police officers. I don't condone what happened to those four officers in Tacoma. I'm sure they all had families who are missing them, and it's sad that this happened. But I've got to say, I think I understand it. And I'm not so sure I could hold the person who shot them accountable for the killing. If I were on the jury, I think I would be very hard pressed to do anything but acquit him. Why? Is that really a question?

Fletcher's GangNet database ripped apart as Bureau of Criminal Apprehension pushes new law for secret files

Next Tuesday morning, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (a part of the Department of Public Safety) is hosting a presentation for legislators and law enforcement to attempt to round up support for the 'Criminal Intelligence Data' bill (Senate File 1103) that would vastly expand their authority to collect, retain and share secret files on Minnesotans, crucial to expanding powers of Minnesota's 'fusion center,' the Minnesota Joint Analysis Center (MnJAC). SF1103 got halted by civil liberties advocates in 2009, but will be back in January. As budget pressures increase(now pegged around a missing $1,200,000,000 statewide), will authorities face data mining cutbacks, or else get support from politicians for locking down and tracking society further?

This week saw a huge defeat for the authorities' data mining & tracking agenda in the state mainstream media, as Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher's hazily defined GangNet (overview PDF) and the smaller BCA Gang Pointer File were both ripped apart by a report by the University of St Thomas School of Law Community Justice Project and the St. Paul NAACP, led by associate professor & St. Thomas Community Justice Project director Nekima Levy-Pounds. 55% of the people in Pointer File and 42% in GangNet are black, and the corrupt, halted Metro Gang Strike Force was evidently deeply involved in these.

Building A "Failed State": Trimet Shows How

Our public agencies and officials are hard at work building a "failed state." I would define a "failed state" as one that does not meet the minimum requirements for attaining a measure of public legitimacy based on serving broad social needs. Such a state can only maintain authority through brute force. A state will "fail" once it stops serving the needs of a critical mass of its citizens.

Video Report Back From Demonstration Against Escalation of Afghanistan Occupation

With very short notice, a couple hundred people showed up at Terry Schrunk Park in downtown Portland this evening, December 2, 2009, to protest President Obama's decision to escalate the Afghanistan Occupation by 30,000 more troops.
As one sign said quite clearly, "the honeymoon is over." Well, at least it might be for those who swallowed the campaign rhetoric and convinced themselves that this particular politician is different, that he isn't the typical political face dancer, that he would regard their opinions and honor his word.
Turns out he is a cut from the same common cloth as all politicians. These elected officials who regard the bankers and financiers on Wall Street, the Generals in the Pentagon and they who occupy the Corporate Suites as the true America. Not the workers whose toil built and sustains the economy; not the soldiers who volunteer their lives and limbs to insure corporate profits; not the people, the fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, who in every facet of their lives provide the United States with its common wealth.

How To "Opt Out" Of School Military Recruitment/Testing/Hassling

If Obama wants to send more troops anywhere, make sure our kids know they don't have to go. I grew up in a city that is next to a u.s. army base, a u.s. air force base, and the headquarters of several major military contractors. All within ten miles of my grade school. I was raised in a NW city that has relied heavily on the money it receives (in all sectors) on military dollars. Chicago Commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Assassination of Fred Hampton

Forty years later, Hampton's assassination remains a chilling example of the lengths that officialdom will go to destroy effective political activism. COINTELPRO was ostensibly dissolved by the FBI in 1971 when the term itself became public, and the Black Panther Party effectively dissolved as an organization shortly thereafter, but official harassment against those carrying on the Panthers' legacy continues, including attempts to rename the portion of West Monroe Street which was the locale Hampton's assassination after Fred Hampton. But resistance on behalf of Chicago's African-American community continues, and on the week of the 40th anniversary, Chicagoans are holding a panoply of events, memorials, rallies, vigils, and commemorations. Houston action in memory of murdered Russian antifascist

Members of Texas RASH visited the Russian consulate in Houston today as part of an international day of action to commemorate Ivan “Kostolom” Khutorskoy, who was shot to death outside of his home in east Moscow on November 16, 2009 by neo-nazi boneheads. Ivan had been hospitalised multiple times in the past after fascist jumped him armed with knives, screwdrivers or bats. He never stopped in his fight against the neo-nazi movement, even after his home address and pictures were posted on fascist websites.

Ivan was a founding member of RASH Moscow and a beloved part of the antifascist community and the anti-racist skinhead scene in Russia. Ivan was a graduate of law school, and since his father died last year he supported his family by working at a center for street children named “Juvenile State Abandonment, Crime, Drugs Use and AIDS Prevention Center“. He was a skilled martial artist and an award-winning arm wrestler, and worked security to ensure the safety of many left-wing demonstrations and cultural events. In the end, his enemies were too cowardly to face him and ended his life with two bullets to the back of his head.

The text of the letter which Texas RASH members today delivered to the Russian Consul in Houston is as follows: [read full article with photos] RASH Russia: R.I.P. Ivan [KOSTOLOM] Khutorskoy

Those who spoke said the investigation is already contaminated and the decision whether or not to charge the police is a foregone conclusion.

A panel comprised of both members of the Kiwane Carrington family and CU Citizens for Peace and Justice, addressed the media cameras. Rhonda Williams, Kiwane’s aunt, said she was appalled that Officer Daniel Norbits, who shot Carrington, was back on the job. “It was a slap in the face,” she said, “and a pat on the back.”

Longtime community activist Terry Townsend pointed out how information about the shooting has been kept from the public. As he put it, “We have been unable to construct a theory of what happened because they have not released the information." READ MORE | VIDEO

Buffalo Anti-War Activists Rally Against Obama Administration's Surge

Soon after it became clear that the Obama administration was going to send another 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, the Western New York Peace Center and other anti-war activists began preparing their response. On Saturday afternoon, around 30 anti-war activists gathered in Bidwell Park for a short rally that then became a roving car-caravan protest throughout the city.

While many of the protesters were traveling throughout the city spreading their opposition, a number remained in Bidwell Park chanting and talking with passerby's. They challenged the notion that an increased troop presence could bring a sustainable peace to Afghanistan or even be an effective anti-terrorism measure. With an estimated 100 Al-Qaeda agents remaining in Afghanistan and the US troop presence soon to reach 90,000, the protesters challenge the anti-terror pretenses of the dramatic increase in soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan.

With this troop surge mirroring the strategies of the Bush administration in Iraq, many protesters questioned the change that the Obama administration claimed to represent, even equating the policies of the two presidents. Many questioned the Democratic Party's willingness to abandon their base once in power. Recent decisions regarding gay marriage in New York State, opening the Alaskan Arctic to further drilling, and the relatively vague standards of health care reform have led many of the activists at the rally to discuss the need for some alternative to the Democratic Party as an instrument for progress.

Rally in Support of the Public Option

By Jenna Piasecki

30 people gathered at Lafayette Square on Main Street tonight to show support for the Public Option. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand have been fighting for the public option and organizer Diana Cihak encouraged everyone who attended the rally to call and have their friends and family call into Schumer and Gillibrand's offices as well as the rest of our representatives in the House and locally to show support for the Public Option. This rally was coordinated with hundreds more across the country.

Speakers at the rally stated that 2,547 people file for bankruptcy daily because of health care-related debt. Health care companies pour $5 million a week into crushing the public option in order to keep their profits high and keep middle class Americans in debt.

Diana Cihak urged Buffalonians to speak out against the closing of clinics locally and the bullying of politicians by health care companies. Cihak is planning another rally for the 17th.

Southern Californian Solidarity with Atenco - Freedom Demanded for Political Prisoners

Throughout Southern California, solidarity actions have been taking place for the political prisoners of San Salvador Atenco. The Mexican activists have been imprisoned for defending their lands and subjected to sub-human and torturous conditions far worse than those suffered by convicted drug traffickers and murderers. Here in the United States, efforts have focused on raising awareness and building support for the campaign to free the wrongfully-incarcerated. And to demand justice from Mexican government. Actions have included film screenings in Maywood and San Bernardino, and a recent tour by human rights defender and lawyer for the Atenco prisoners; Leonel Rivero. This year's International Human Rights Day events focus on the prisoners of Atenco, abuses in the Philippines, the human rights of migrants, and the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Leslie Parks Illegally Locked Out of Her Home by IndyMac/One West Bank

On Tuesday night, Dec. 8, in a freezing blizzard, Leslie Parks returned from her job to find that IndyMac/One West had changed the locks to her home (3749 Park Ave. in Minneapolis).

Locking Leslie Parks out of her home is illegal. In fact it is beyond illegal, given the struggle that Leslie Parks is waging to keep her home. It is a cynical breach of what all assumed were good faith negotiations on the part of IndyMac/One West.

After the start of national call-in week to IndyMac officials, IndyMac informed Leslie, in writing, on Nov. 25 that they were rescinding both the foreclosure and the sheriffs sale. According to Ms. Parks, “I got an email from IndyMac stating, and I quote, ‘In an effort to work with you and your mother and come to a resolution, we have started the process of rescinding the Trusteed Sale which took place on May 29, 2009.’

School of the Americas Watch 2009 -- Presente

By Victoria B. Ross
Source: The Buffalo Activist

The SOAWatch gathering was a memorable and moving event. Four activists crossed the line and got arrested, including Father Louis Vitale of Pace y Bene who spoke in Buffalo recently, and Nancy Gwin of Syracuse. Hundreds of us also “pushed the envelope” by passing the police barricade into the streets of Columbus – far enough to register the resistance but not to get arrested. The Puppetistas and Cakalak Thunder (which I was privileged to be part of) led the way in both directions.

Four Buffalonians traveled to Cleveland (thanks to our donors!) to take one of three full busses to the event, courtesy of Inter-Religious Task Forc. The average age of bus passengers was 20, with many high school and college students; and many first-timers (as all four of our Buffalo contingent was). The crowd at the event itself was diverse – full of young and old, and there were another almost 20 other Buffalonians there, mostly students from Canisius.

Open Letter to the Governor concerning OHSU's treatment of Women

This is a call for informed consent reform and the criminal prosecution of medical staff who participate in the "medical rape" of patients. ALL Oregon Rape victims are directed to OHSU for rape exams, even if they live hours away. Many simply accept the emergency care at their local hospital and go home. Women who are raped and make a mistake of going to OHSU, may suffer a second rape. Now I know folks do not like to call any sort of "medical care" rape, but times are changing and the laws need to change with them. Raped women who do not want to suffer a rape kit, or not with males present are forced, rather than accommodated, that is by any reasonable woman standard a second rape. OHSU may call the police, as if they have the right to give them permission to violate a patient's rights, or they may just sedate her and move forward. Now one might say, they need to catch the rapist, but OHSU has another, perhaps more influential motive for this second rape.

What Really Happens When You Take Your Dog to the Pound

Every year, thousands of people turn in their dogs and cats to county animal shelters. They all have their... "reasons." They will tell you how they "just couldn't care for him anymore," how they are moving, how they are having a baby, how they are downsizing, how the cat is peeing outside the box, how the dog has become a "handful." And they will tell themselves, and you, that it was the right thing to do, that it was for the good of the animal, that it is the best thing. They stupidly think the dog or cat will get a "good home."
If this is you, pull your head out. Let me tell you what really happens when you take an animal to the pound.

Let's talk about the Multnomah County Animal Shelter, but it could be any pound because they are all pretty much the same. The Multnomah county animal shelter has a kill rate of roughly 50% for dogs, and 75% for cats. That means that one out of every two dogs, and two out of every three cats who come through their doors will not get out of there alive. And that's only part of the story.

Protect public land: Tell NW Natural No Palomar Pipeline for LNG

The new Hey NW Natural Campaign is uniting gas customers with farmers to hold NW Natural accountable and protect our public lands. Over 1500 private landowners, two state forests and Mt. Hood National Forest are threatened by the pipeline. You can take action to protect Oregon farmers and public land.
Oregon gas giant, NW Natural, was recently forced by federal court to release the list of names of the 1500 Oregonian's whose land is threatened to be condemned for a right-of-way for the Palomar gas pipeline. Steve Wick was one of these names - Steve is an old time Oregonian who raises filberts and hopes to start raising grapes -- but now his plans are put on hold because of the threat of the pipeline.
He is not alone. This project poses an imminent threat to the land and livelihood of everyone on that list, at the direct hand of fossil fuel expansion and the desire for corporate profit. The 1500 named landowners along the pipeline route are not the only people impacted by the pipeline.

Seattle Inter-praxis

In the back of a truck on a rainy winter day we pull off I-5 into Seattle. High in the distance a banner hangs from a crane building condos. WTO this way, Democracy that. A guy holding incense flashes a victory sign greets cars as they go into downtown. We find our friends, the house we would be staying in for the week of the convention. This house near downtown became our trenches. We ate from cans of beans with pocket knives.
I was here to take pictures. I had been part of demonstrations in the months leading up to the WTO. I had captured images on film with an old Nikon-F that my father had given me. On our first night, we plastered a Starbucks with political posters. These protest posters were tokens of the revolution. This was before 9-11 so things felt hopeful. Environmental activists and Union activists coming together in unity, in solidarity.

ABOLISH THE REAPER DRONE

By Ed Kinane

Why did over 200 people from all over upstate New York recently converge on the NY Air National Guard Base at Hancock Airport to protest the MQ-9 Reaper Drones operating from there?

The MQ-9 Reaper is a hunter-killer unmanned aircraft designed for long-endurance, high-altitude surveillance. Developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., it is also used for bombing and assassination – for extrajudicial execution.

That drone is a high-tech, high-flying robot. Via satellite it communicates with “pilots” on the ground. It can operate in radioactive environments. Its sensors can see in the night. It can hover for hours, invisibly, over a target. With uncanny accuracy, God-like, the Reaper’s missiles and bombs can obliterate that target.

The crisis won’t be solved by Patterson’s cuts, but by us.

The imperial aspirations of Governor Patterson will not solve the budget crisis. Recently, he has proposed emergency measures that would give him unilateral power to create the next state budget; which was “was rejected practically instantly” (11/25/09, Buffalo News). Public services do not have to suffer, yet the solution requires restructuring and redistribution of funds from the top to the bottom; something that the powers that be have never done without political demands being made by grassroots motion and calling on whatever political insurgency (i.e. progressive legislators) can be mustered.

According to the Buffalo News, on Dec. 3rd, “New York's Senate has joined the Assembly in approving a measure to reduce the state's budget deficit by about $2.8 billion” (“NY Lawmakers Approve Deficit Cutting Plan”) and thereafter, the article cited the Governor’s specific desire to cut education and hospital funding. These two sectors are extremely vital to the lives of everyday people, and it is extremely dire when the health and the intellectual growth of a population are sacrificed when according to word of mouth, in the wake of 2008 SUNY tuition increase, the governor ordered thousand dollar wine glasses.

What’s to be done? In Berkeley, CA at UC Berkeley on November19th, the Regents board announced a tuition hike by 32% and the cutting of 38 custodial jobs, and in response according to the San Francisco Indymedia the students occupied the University. The occupation ended on the 21st amongst three days (18th-21st) of planned demonstrations with a tuition freeze and 38 custodial jobs (11/21/09, San Francisco Chronicle). Their occupation was complemented by a 250 strong mass lobby here, in Manchester, England. Under the banners of Unions and the newly formed Manchester for Jobs and Education, we stood against 127 job cuts and the £180 million in education de-funding ($296 million). Across the board, acts of student militancy and organization of both workers and students have begun. To defend our interests, especially in a city with three big universities (UB, BSC, and Canisus College) and a sizeable Community college (ECC) we have to invest our energy towards movement at the bottom.

New Report--Tax $$ goes to Sweatshops

"Toxic Uniforms: Behind the ‘Made in USA’ Label" is a new report released on December 10, 2009, International Human Rights Day

This report is highlighted by the Ashland Sweatfree Campaign who successfully worked with the City of Ashland, which first adopted a sweatfree resolution and followed up with a no-sweat-shop policy for the procurement of uniforms & garments for city employees. In April, 2009 the campaign brought to Ashland a speaking tour with Rafael Irizarry, a garment worker at Propper International in Puerto Rico, who is featured in this new report. Photos of Irizarry taken during his Ashland visit can be viewed below.

Ongoing educational work by the Ashland Sweatfree Campaign has included an art exhibit of women garment worker paintings on display in the Ashland Council Chambers in November, 2009. The Campaign is a project of Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice and its ad-hoc committee is composed of the following Ashland residents: Pam Vavra, Rich Rohde, Brenda Gould, Steve Ryan, Eric Navickas, Jason Houk and Wes Brain.

RNC 8 To Stand Trial Together

ST. PAUL, Minnesota — Following their October 8, 2009 hearing before Judge Teresa R. Warner, the RNC 8 received word [Wednesday] that they will face a single joint trial, not the eight or three separate trials favored by the office of Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner. The defendants were preemptively arrested before the Republican National Convention began last year, following many months of police infiltration and surveillance of their group, the RNC Welcoming Committee, which helped organize lodging, food, and medical and legal aid for those protesting the convention.

“This is an affirmation from Judge Warner of what we’ve argued all along: that separation for trial would have undermined the interest of justice in this case,” says co-defendant Luce Guillen-Givins.  ”Our best defense comes through standing in solidarity with each other, both inside and outside of the courtroom.”

Prof. Stephen Kaufman Sends Letter Protesting "Chief" Finney

> To: Schweighart_Jerry
> From: Stephen Kaufman
> Subject: Chief Finney

Dear Mayor Schweighart and Members of the Champaign City Council,

Champaign Police Chief Finney is free to to be on any side of any debate.  However, when Finney is on duty as a public police officer, his wearing a U of I chief logo demonstrates a profound disregard and ignorance of issues of race that have confronted the CU community for two decades.  Moreover, it rightly raises the question, whether Finney is fit to lead the Champaign Police Department and how his attitudes on race contributed to the killing of Kwame Carrington.

The African American community provided extraordinary leadership and was instrumental in bringing the Illinois mascot issue to its conclusion.  The local NAACP led the national NAACP to unanimously vote to end the use of Native Americans as sports mascots. Finney's persistence in wearing the chief logo speaks loudly to his lack of the concerns of all communities for racial equity.

The landlord "power that be" at The Kennedy-Warren are coercing tenants to agree to "temporary evictions" in order to make what it claims are "necessary repairs" (under the 501(f) "relocation" provisions of the law). According to some tenants, because of clogged sinks and blown fuses, Saul is claiming the need to tear open the walls of all units, install clothes washers, lower the ceilings, alter closet space for cable installation, and of course, to evict the tenants to do such "pressing work". Threats to implement huge increases for utilities and other improvements face tenants who refuse to sign on the dotted line or who assert their rights.

The D5 event was enthusiastic and well attended, with information tables, creative signs, puppets, music and theater. I'd say about 700 people met underneath the Hawthorne bridge to get acquainted and prepare the march to PSU. Along the way there was a tug of war between the people and the wealthy at the Federal building, and at Hoffman Hall, wealthy men with cigars collected money and stuffed it into their pockets, dolling out pennies to the people.

At the Hall, various speakers addressed issues within the theme of Fair Trade. [...] All praised the victory over the World Trade Organization (WTO)and the corporate Free Trade Agenda in Seattle in late 1999. But, Lori Wallach, Director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch division, went further, saying that stopping the WTO, in Seattle and other places, is only the first step. The next and most important step would be "to turn it around." READ MORE | RELATED: Seattle N30 Commerative Rally at Westlake Park

They asked that Tesla not choose the site in Downey for their new plant.

Transitioning to Linux/Report on the 2009 Linux Expo L.A.

Right: The table for the Open Source Voting Consortium at the L.A. Linux Expo '09.

In the spring of 2008, after years of getting p.o.'d at Microsoft on almost a daily basis, I switched over to Linux (free, non-proprietary software). I had just gotten a new computer, and a friend who was setting it up for me, offered Linux as an option. This seemed a bit risky since Linux sounded less user-friendly than Microsoft, and I am not a technically-savvy person. Yet I loved the idea of being free of Microsoft and proprietary software. I took a chance and went with Linux. In the ensuing year, my computer sessions became markedly less stressful--it was usually at zero.

. . . On February 19th of this year, I attended the 2009 Linux Expo in L.A. Below are conversations I had with a few of the vendors. Medics targeted at Cop15 protest

Medics including two qualified paramedics, two Red Cross cadets and other trained first-aiders from the UK, Norway, Germany and other countries were stopped in a series of incidents in the Christianshavn area. They were searched three or four times each, photographed and held in cages at Valby temporary police station for 6 hours. Arresting units included numbers 702 and 724.

The detention (not full arrest) was under the Danish Police Act, which permits preventative detention of people thought to be 'a danger to public security' or 'likely to cause a public disturbance' (approximate translation). But police told people they had been detained specifically because they were medics, in order to stop them providing first aid at demos.

One group of seven was initially told they would be released after being searched, but the police unit commander then received orders from his superior to detain the group.

PUSH tells National Fuel, “enough is enough! Stop depending on us to go broke year after year!”

For the whole of 2009, there’s been one constant in People United For Sustainable Housing’s interactions with people in the West Side. When told that the organization is combating the problem of high heating bills (the 3rd highest in the nation, in a city rated the 3rd poorest in the U.S.) many residents first thought was that there was an upcoming action against National Fuel.

It wasn’t that simple. From the start of the Green Jobs, Green Housing Campaign in March, to the passage of the New York State Green Jobs, Green Homes Act in October, PUSH and its allies had to target the state government in order to ensure that Federal stimulus funds actually made it past the backpockets of politicians and state bureaucrats and towards their intended purpose: sustainable job creation in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

For impoverished inner-city neighborhoods, the solution to the energy crisis is simple-local job creation through the renovation of every house, so that precious heat doesn’t simply escape through ancient (or cheaply constructed) walls and windows. Whereas for many the notion of “going green” is seen as an upper class lifestyle involving expensive solar panels and strange foods, for Rust Belt neighborhoods going green is literally a matter of survival. For every elderly person that is found frozen to death in their apartment every year, there are thousands who have to decide whether to pay their heat or their rent. This is the real face of the climate crisis and the economic recession.

Medford Walmart heads towards Oregon Supreme Court

Medford, Oregon, December 11, 2009 -- Medford Citizens for Responsible Development (MCRD) has not given up on the fight against powerful Walmart's legal team and the Superstore planned for South Medford. The fight continues and so do the worries about traffic congestion. Building such a monster store will bring on a super traffic nightmare, yet Medford refuses to do a traffic study which is required in their code. The area is already becoming a traffic nightmare even without building a Walmart Superstore.

MCRD has now petitioned the Oregon Supreme Court requesting a review of the earlier Court of Appeals Decision to Overturn a LUBA Ruling in the Matter of Requiring a Traffic Study for the Wal-Mart Superstore. (LUBA is Oregon's Land Use Board of Appeals.) We anticipate a decision by the Court to consider our appeal within 30 to 60 days.

Attached below is the petition for review delivered by MCRD's attorney to the Oregon Supreme Court earlier this week.

Will the Last “Progressive for Obama” Please Turn Out the Lights?

The U.S. peace “movement,” much of which “comes and goes” as often as Boy George’s “Karma Chameleon,” has finally discovered that its presumed perch in Barack Obama’s tree was untenable, if not wholly imaginary. To be sure, “Progressives for Obama” and other assorted delusional groupings were always squatters in the Obama camp – but they were the only ones who didn’t know it. How embarrassing it would have been, back during the campaign, had the lost little lefties realized that Obama’s imperial soul mates were laughing at them from a disdainful distance, knowing full well the path their bought-and-paid-for president would soon be traveling. How would the Obama peacenik groupies have preserved their sense of self-worth – much less their arrogant smugness – had they realized the absolute contempt in which they were held by their hero’s funders and packagers – and no doubt by the Object of Adulation, himself?

CALL TO ACTION: *Crow Creek Land Is Not for Sale*

Crow Creek Brandon Sazue’s camper sitting in the middle of the prairie presented a lonely but inspiring image as we drove up [last] Wednesday afternoon.  Despite the bitter cold and wind, the young Crow Creek tribal chairman was taking a stand against the United States theft of any more Dakota lands, telling us “Crow Creek land is not for sale, and it never will be.”

Symbolically placing his camper under a wind data tower, Sazue has committed to remain on this parcel of land as long as it takes to achieve justice.  The land is part of the 7,112 acres recently stolen by the United States government in what amounts to a 21st century land grab.  Because the land is not currently held in trust, on December 4, 2009, the Internal Revenue Service used that as an opportunity to claim it and auction it off as a means to settle what they assert is a delinquent $3,123,790 tax bill.  Read More | Portland Indymedia Coverage | Related: Who Turned Off the Lights for the Residents of Crow Creek? -- Mankato Memorial Ride Dec. 13-26

Ben Carnes on the film "Warrior: The Life of Leonard Peltier"

In advance of his appearance this week at an L.A. screening of "Warrior: The Life of Leonard Peltier," Ben Carnes of the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee discussed that film, Leonard Peltier, and a variety of other Native American issues.

The free showing of "Warrior: The Life of Leonard Peltier" will take place on December 17 at the National Center for Preservation of Democracy in Little Tokyo at 7pm. Carnes, who will present the film, believes it is one of a few documentaries that explains and clarifies the circumstances surrounding Peltier's imprisonment. (Another film he mentioned was Incident at Oglala by Michael Apted.)

At the time of Peltier's alleged shooting of an FBI agent (June of 1975), Carnes said that "they just wanted to arrest a group of AIM (American Indian Movement) people and have a big media riff because there was such a propaganda campaign that was going on against the American Indian Movement—that they were being trained by communists in Cuba, all kinds of derogatory things to help discredit them. But on the day of that shootout there were just strange things that happening that day that screwed their plans up. When the agents went in, there was another agent."

VIDEO: Undeclared Emergency - Homelessness & Rape in Portland

I filmed a 5 minute interview about the "PDX Undeclared Emergency" regarding women being safe on the streets when they are houseless. The Right 2 Survive campaign informed me on some recent bad news regarding homeless women being raped in the Portland area. Lately there have been some rapes in the homeless community in and around NE Portland. The Right 2 Survive is concerned and is activly doing something about it.

The activists have been organizing foot patrols and handing out whistles to women who are sleeping outside to use in the event that they are being abused or attacked. If you hear a whistle blowing go towards it and see / help / etc.... The Right 2 Survive group is asking for community solidarity in offering protection to folks (women) who are without any source of security to be free from rape and abuse while they just try to get through the night. The Right 2 Survive activists are not only seeking protection and organizing whistle handouts and networking on the street level, they are also asking and demanding the city takes a responsible role as well. They are showing up in city offices and working for real changes. They need the greater PDX community's support and their solidarity.

Collapse in Copenhagen: Climate Justice Advocates Demand a Deal, But COP15 is a Meltdown

Civil society, NGOs, island nations and nations from the Global South all demanded a "FAB" - fair, ambitious and binding - deal from this month's COP15 climate summit in Copenhagen. But as the summit concluded Friday, the only proposals on the table were none of the above. Some world leaders remained at the summit well past midnight, hashing out a document many are calling a "COPout." Others, such as President Obama, scurried to the airport to escape the climate crime scene that is Copenhagen's Bella Centre. At 2am inside the Centre, dozens of people chanting "Climate Justice Now!" held pictures of Obama with "Climate Shame" printed across his forehead.

The mass movement for climate justice on the streets of Copenhagen was, predictably, met with brutal force by the Danish Politi. Even accredited delegates were savagely beaten back with batons while attempting to walk out of the Bella Centre. In response, a call for solidarity actions prompted demonstrations worldwide. In Minneapolis (photos), a small group marched for climate justice on Nicollet Mall Friday night, just before the start of the city's popular "Holidazzle" parade.

SNOWPOCALYPSE! Plainclothes Cop Pulls Gun on Snowball Fight at 14th and U After His Hummer Takes A "Hit"

LOCAL BOSS MEDIA LIES THROUGH TEETH, AS PER USUAL; CLAIMS COP RESPONDING TO "REPORT OF A MAN WITH A GUN" AT 14TH & U Reader "cookietime420" writes in to the Prince Of Petworth blog: The cops were standing by, stepping in now and then, generally annoyed. It got dangerous now and then, when snowballers would run in front of moving cars, but nobody got hit. Most cars moved through the intersection without getting hit. The snowballs were directed at other snowball fighters. Folks even helped push cars that got stuck in the street. Then the hummer showed up on the northeast corner of 14th and U. A few people threw (very soft – the snow wasn’t good for snowball formation) snowballs at his “car” and jokingly chanted “drill baby drill.” Then he got out and the rest is history. Folks chanted “don’t bring a gun to a snowball fight.” I’m utterly shocked that a guy in a hummer did something like this. Owning a hummer is usually a sign of a more refined individual. The Indypendent Issue 144: Quagmire, Full Speed Ahead

President Barack Obama has given the green light to go full speed ahead in Afghanistan. What is he really getting himself into?

Anand Gopal, a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, reports on the quagmire that is the Afghan War.

Gopal writes, “Every time the Americans come into an area the bombing increases. After Obama sent 21,000 troops earlier this year, there was a 60 percent increase in violence over last year, which was already at record levels.

Despite the fact that every time the troops go into an area the violence increases and Pashtuns don’t want the Americans there, Obama is still putting more troops into the situation.

What’s the end game in all of this if they just keep throwing troops into it and the Pashtuns keep fighting back?”

Olympic Resistance Network Speaker Prevented From Speaking Out in Portland

She was held for over six hours as both Canadian and US border guards interrogated her about the subject of her speech, her contacts in Portland, and her political activities. She was previously denied entry for a Seattle speaking event on the grounds that ten anti-Olympic shirts were unauthorised commercial merchandise, but the shirts were found after she had already been questioned on political issues. Likewise, the excuse for rejecting her this time (lack of employment since her graduation in August) was brought up after her planned speech and political activities were addressed by border guards.

Eugene Shows Solidarity with Copenhagen Demonstrators

In the wake of the failure of the governments of the world to come any substantial consensus on what to do about climate change, and in view of their failure to even discuss real solutions to climate change, members of Eugene's Black Tea Society staged a solidarity action in the form of a banner drop. The COP15 talks only served to reaffirm what many of us in the climate justice movement already knew: that the so-called "leaders" of the world have no intention of rising above petty national bickering to solve the most urgent crisis of our time. In the face of government collaboration and inaction it is the responsibility of every human to rise to the defence of mother earth. We are but the crest of a rising tide of popular discontent which will sweep away the old order, replacing it with one based in mutual aid, sustainable living, and cooperative economics. Houston observes International Day of the Migrant protesting private immigrant prison

SDS and others picked the Houston Processing Center to protest the raids of Mambos restaurants and detaining 33 restaurant workers on suspected immigration violations, on Dec 2nd. The location of the Houston Processing Center is important, as the first private prison in the United States. Private companies operate dozens of detention centers for immigrants across the nation [map].

About 2 dozen protesters gathered on Greens Road and walked a picket line with chants about immigrant rights including; "What do we want? Immigrant Right! How do we get it? Melt the ICE!" "Immigrantes, Escucha, estamos en su lucha" "Immigration is not a crime, why are people doing time?" and "Ariba, Abajo, migra al carajo!" We had a powerful soundsystem that may very well have permeated the thick concrete walls of the detention center. People spoke and sang songs, we did interviews with television reporters, and we then marched to the other side of the facility. The south side of the facility is the visitor entrance, where during specified hours people can visit their loved ones locked up in the detention center. We sang and chanted more, and then called it a day and left. [Full article with photos]

Wade Rathke, founder of ACORN, promotes book in Buffalo

By Irene Morrison
Source: The Buffalo Activist Online

Last week, Wade Rathke, the founder of ACORN, came to Buffalo to promote his new book, Citizen Wealth: Winning the Campaign to Save Working Families. The book makes the case that organizing around homeownership is one of the most effective ways for low- and moderate-income (LMI) families to gain economic stability, what he terms citizen wealth, and discusses the successes and challenges which organizers around these issues experience. Rathke also discusses the need for unions at a time in which they are increasingly under attack, as well as the need to continue to pressure corporations to end predatory lending and tax preparation practices.

At a time when much of the left-leaning and progressive media seems to be too negative (though I don’t disagree that there is plenty to be negative about), Citizen Wealth provides an optimistic but not overly-rosy look at the future of the working class. He maintains that we must reframe an argument that has been driven by ideology on the right rather than facts. A key term in this argument is the concept of wealth, which includes income but also includes home ownership, savings, health insurance, and any other asset that has the potential to create opportunities for family members.

Rathke believes that corporations can be pressed to change business practices not only at through legislation but through negotiations with grassroots organizations as well. Citing several examples with smaller community banks as well as corporations like H & R Block, Rathke highlights successes, primarily at the community level, which organizations like ACORN have won.

Klamath Justice Coalition Halts Logging on Karuk Sacred Sites

The Klamath Justice Coalition organized a blockade in northern California this week, to stop a U.S. Forest Service logging contractor from damaging any sites held sacred by the Indigenous Karuk Nation.

Before daybreak on December 16, members of the indigenous-led Coalition gathered at Orleans Mountain Lookout Road within the Six Rivers National Forest and set up a large fire in the roadway. Fortunately, the logging crew took the moral and legally responsible path and turned back without involving the police.

"This morning's small but important victory marks the beginning of our campaign to defend Karuk sacred sites and protect the health of our forests," says Karuk Ceremonial Leader Leaf Hillman, in a Press Release issued after the protest.

Senate Speech Heralds New Social Movement

If you do only one more political thing this year as we put 2009 to bed--RIP, let it be to listen to Bernie Sanders on the floor of the United States Senate speak about Health Care Reform which boots out corporate greed! Sanders speech is being heralded the "New Social Movement" and this couldn't come at a better time...

For 2009 reflect for just a minute on all the garbage we have been subjected to pertaining to Health Care Reform and realize that from the start the campaign has been designed by the corporate greedy who literally buy reform that makes them lots & lots more money. Profit over people wins again. The campaign for healthcare reform loses, but out of it we have the "New Social Movement"

So let us do put 2009 to bed and permanently behind us. It has been a horrible year, however we deserve to end it on a high note. We need this. If you do only one more political thing this year listen to Bernie Sanders uplifting speech describing a wonderful vision for 2010. Not a campaign, a movement!--In solidarity, Wes Brain, Chair, Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice, CARRY ON!

AntiFascist Hackers Release Info from 11 Neo-Nazi Message Boards

In a massive blow to fascist organizing, hackers are in the process of formatting data taken from 11 neo-Nazi message boards, including private messages, email addresses, and passwords. Neo-Nazi's ability to propagandize and recruit is always hindered when examined with a critical lens, because their ideological arguments simply do not stand up on their own.

Antifascist hackers have released information from the websites of the following neo-Nazi groups and projects: Volksfront International--a white power skinhead crew founded in here in Portland, Aryan Front, Blood and Honour, the Creativity Movement, East Coast White Unity, the ENationionalist forum, Final Stand Records, Hammerskin Nation--whose 20th anniversary festival slated to happen in the Willamette Valley in October of 2007 was shut down by the Ad-Hoc Coalition Against Racism and Fascism, NorthEast White Pride, and the White Revolution Forum.

Tech-savvy antifascists are in the process of formatting the data to make it more easily accessible, and WikiLeaks has requested help with this project. For any of you Indymedia readers interested in opposing white supremacist organizing, this would be one great way to help. And if you find any information that might be useful, sharing it with Portland's chapter of the Anti-Racist Action Network (Rose City Antifa) might be a place to start. Google/Paypal Owners Building "Green" Electric Car On Downey Toxic Dump Site?

Tesla management and the Google major stake holders Larry Page and Sergey Brin along with former owner of Paypal Elon Musk are moving ahead with plans to build a “green” auto assembly plant at the toxic downey dump site in southern California where hundreds of workers have been sickened. They have also received a $465 million loan from the Obama Department of Energy DOE to build the non-union assembly auto plant. Why would these billionaire owners need a US government loan to build a green electric car plant if they believe in this product?

. . . The California Coalition For Workers Memorial Day and the Peninsula Raging Grannies will be having a press/education/musical event in conjunction with the Detroit Auto Show which opens in Detroit on January 8, 2009.

"Peace on Earth" vigil 2009

This was the sixth consecutive year (a conservative count) that the Northeast LA Radical Neighbors have held vigils on December 25. The last several vigils have been a joint collaboration with the weekly Montrose Peace Vigil.

Locations of our December 25 vigil have changed over the years. Yesterday, we had it in Eagle Rock. Six of us turned out. While many passersby were non-committal, many others gave us peace signs (and we exchanged waves with a police car). A few even thanked us for being there.

Many of ours signs addressed the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, but support for same-sex marriage was also prominent. Story and photos"Peace on Earth" vigil 2009 by R of the Northeast LA Radical Neighbors

VIDEO: Torture Protest - Interview with The Lone Vet

On 12.17.09 I stopped at the weekly protest for the arrest or Impeachment for Judge ByBee. This vigil is held in Portland in front of the federal court where ByBee is one of the judges who sits on the Ninth Court of Appeals. [This is] An interview with The Lone Vet outside the Ninth Circuit Court. He describes what the protest is and talks a bit about the spirit of doing goodwill to all men and peace on earth. In this video clip the Lone Vet explains what the protest is and why there is a group standing in public demanding accountability, the reward for ByBee's arrest and more.

Judge ByBee thinks torture and pain inflicting abuses done to prisoners in US custody is fine. So each week at noon a handful of individuals for justice stand in public, in front of a court he sits on, to bring attention to the Torture memo writing Judge. The group is also sponsoring a 3,000 dollar reward for the arrest of this judge, paid for in pledged donations.

This ongoing protest (outside of the ninth circuit courthouse) continues with a slight 2 week break for the holidays.

Radical Writer's Guild Gathering

"Walking On Water: Reading, Writing and Revolution" inspired me to share Derrick Jensen's take on education (and seduction).
We'll be reading a couple or few chapters every week...

My hope is for these gatherings to couple authors and editors, to join friends in exploration of creative expression. As Derrick describes the role of a teacher "to praise [students] into becoming who they are, But if I see someone misusing power to harm someone else, it's just as much my responsibility to stop them, using whatever means necessary." Everyone benefits when converging to share (un)common interests and skills, so I hope you'll show up too.

Every Saturday night, even the night after giftmas day (bring that junk from the in-laws you would not ever imagine wanting and let's do a white elephant gift exchange!), at 7pm.

This weekly event will be held at the People's Co-op upstairs in the community room. If possible bring your own writing materials, if not please still come. Donations to help cover the rent are welcomed.

So far, only Lynn Lehrbach, on the TriMet board, has voted with the 1,400 transit riders who turned in petitions against cutting Fareless Square, to the unelected TriMet board, to save Fareless Square and fight other transit service cuts (TriMet is cutting both bus and MAX service, even as they keep building more light rail and streetcar lines, prioritizing capital projects from Obama stimulus money over providing bus service to workers, unemployed, students, seniors and the poor).

Stop the deportation of Ryan Olander; American citizen arrested in Sheikh Jarrah

Ryan Olander is due to be deported by the Israeli state, after being illegally arrested and detained in the Palestinian neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, in Occupied East Jerusalem. Please contact the Embassy of the United States in Tel Aviv, the Israeli Minister of Interior, or consider donating towards Ryan’s legal costs.

Ryan is currently being held at a deportation facility in Ramle, where his request for release has been rejected by the prison judge. His lawyer is working on submitting an appeal to the District Court in Tel Aviv this Sunday, 27 December.

Ryan was visiting the al-Kurds in the tent the Palestinian family built in their own backyard, after the recent setter take-over of a section of their house. At 1.15pm, on Friday 18 December, 6 Israeli police walked into the tent, where Ryan was talking to the family members and drinking tea, and took him for questioning at the Russian Compound police station in west Jerusalem. (For more information about his arrest click here.)

Ryan was released without charges the following Saturday, 19 December, before the beginning of a trial with 26 Israeli activists arrested in Sheikh Jarrah, only to be illegally re-arrested by immigration police right outside of the same police station that told him he was free to go. Now Ryan is facing illegal deportation after being held in Israeli prisons for a week.

Edgar Heap of Birds Speaks at Closing of “Beyond the Chief” Exhibit

EdgarHeapofBirds 018.JPG

On December 4, 2009, Cheyenne-Arapaho artist Edgar Heap of Birds gave a talk at the YMCA on the University of Illinois campus for the closing of his “Beyond the Chief” art exhibit. He spoke publicly for the first time about the State’s Attorney’s failure to fully prosecute a former student who was caught stealing two of his art works.

The “Beyond the Chief” exhibit opened in early 2009 and consists of twelve panels that were installed along Nevada Street on campus. Several of the metal sign panels were bent in separate incidents. In April, two of them were stolen. Of the dozen panels, a total of seven were vandalized. These incidents were clearly part of a reaction to the University’s retirement of its racist mascot in February 2007.

Resistance Against Checkpoints

Law enforcement agencies have declared they will hold 300 "DUI" checkpoints during the holiday season statewide. Furthermore, they have declared 2010 "the year of the checkpoint." Checkpoints are a military tactic that violate the Fourth Amendment and condition society to passivity toward police interference in daily activities. They disproportionately impact immigrant communities, who face deportation due to 287(g) agreements, which deputize local law agencies to enforce federal immigration law. For these reasons, resistance to "the checkpoint society" has been fierce, and has included lobbying local officials, holding vigils and marches, creating communication networks, and actually being present at checkpoints to warn passing motorists and document abuses. Follow reports from the struggle:

Obama, the Fallen Messiah

During a time of economic decline, persistent cultural strife, deepening American involvement in far-off military conflicts, and rapid environmental deterioration, is there any wonder that so many Americans believe in salvation fantasies promising them both a transcendent, everlasting future and violent retribution against perceived evildoers? A 2002 CNN poll found that 59% of Americans believed that the prophecies in the Book of Revelations would come true. The startling number reflected the still-fresh trauma of the 9/11 attacks, but I suspect that it has held steady, if not risen. Indeed, mainstream American culture is permeated by apocalyptic beliefs and the yearning for messianic deliverance; the success of the movie 2012 and the forthcoming schlockbuster Legacy are just two recent examples.

As Buffalonians protest, Gaza Freedom March attempts to enter the Strip

By Irene Morrison
Source: The Buffalo Activist

About 30 people gathered in Buffalo on December 27th, a wet and snowy Sunday, to remember Israel's assault on Gaza, which began one year ago, a boiling point in a conflict that has been ongoing since 1948.

Internationally, the Gaza Freedom March is attempting to break the blockade on Gaza's border with Egypt, and to send in some badly needed humanitarian aid. Though they have not yet been successful and have now called for a hunger strike, should they be allowed into Gaza, the aid they bring is only a drop in the bucket compaired to the aid Gazans really need. The March is intended to call attention to this, as well as to pressure Egypt to fully open its border and lift the siege on Gaza.

Trial of Cop for the Murder of Oscar Grant to Begin

In Oakland, California, in the early hours of January 1st of this year, while Bay Area Rapid Transit passenger Oscar Grant III lay face-down on a BART platform with another officer's knee on his shoulder, BART police officer Johannes Mehserle drew his service weapon and shot Oscar Grant in the back, execution-style. This type of killing of an unarmed, young African American man by police is all too common in America. L.A. police are reported to have killed 310 people in the last ten years. Not surprisingly, the corporate media has done a terrible job reporting on the various hearings, generally parroting defense motions and testimony of BART cops verbatim with little to no critical analysis or reporting on evidence that refutes defense claims. Police accountability and media activists are currently organizing to ensure that the community is informed of the trial's proceedings and that justice is achieved for Oscar Grant.
