Anti-gay Catholic Group Spreads Hate, Bigotry

Rochester25 Jul 2009
From a few blocks away, only a narrow red banner could be seen swaying in the breeze at the intersection of Exchange Blvd. and Broad St. At a closer glance, one could make out six to eight well-dressed men, hair gelled to the side, yielding signs reading: "Honk for traditional marriage — 1 man + 1 woman" and "God's marriage = 1 man & 1 woman." But upon closer inspection—-in the form of prying questions posed to the individuals holding the signs—-a message frothed with hatred, bigotry, and a misreading of history was revealed.

Elegy for Appalachia

Colorado30 Jun 2009
Denver, CO (Sunday June 28, 2009) — I arrive outside the regional EPA office just after 2pm. It's the second day of PrideFest, and the far end of the 16th Street Mall is nearly deserted. On the far side of the street, a trumpet player sits on a bench, improvising a slow, sad tune. His name is Joe Ferrone, and his song is an elegy for Appalachia.

Joe and I are here because of the EPA's recent approval of 42 new mountaintop removal sites and Mountain Justice's subsequent call to action.... read more

HATE crimes commited Saturday June 13th

Portland18 Jun 2009
It is with a heavy heart and a bruised face that I write this letter but I think it's important that my experience be known.

In the early morning hours of Sunday June 14th, I was the victim of a hate crime on the corner of NW 6th and Couch. This happened outside of Casey's, a gay bar where I am a dj and it was 2:30 in the morning, after the bar had closed.

When I came outside to make my way home, I saw that a friend of mine was talking with the Portland Police. She had been punched in the face by a man who had been spouting homophobic remarks at her and another friend of mine. Her nose was broken and the police had arrived to investigate this crime. While I was watching this interaction, a group of men approached the scene also shouting homophobic remarks. I walked up to them to ask them to leave the area and the next thing I remember, I was on the ground with my mouth bleeding. I didn't really know or understand what had happened. I had been punched in the mouth and knocked out.

The Portland Police department, who was on the scene, was completely negligent to my situation. They talked to the guy who said I had started it, yet there wasn't a scratch on him and I was the one on the ground bleeding. As I was sitting on the ground, the police officers refused to let a friend of mine bring me ice for my face, threatening to arrest him if he attempted to approach me.

Remembering the Stonewall Rebellion in this week's Socialist WebZine

Boston10 Jun 2009
The Stonewall Inn, a gay and lesbian neighborhood bar with a large number of African American and Latino patrons, was also well-known as a safe space for those who did not conform to gender norms: butch lesbians, effeminate gay men, and transsexual and transgendered persons before the terms were in popular use. All of these factors brought the police to Stonewall in 1969 for the purpose of illegally raiding the bar, and arresting its occupants -- an action not unknown in New York in the 1960s....

Unprovoked Police Riot at Bash Back! Convergence May 30

Minneapolis/St. Paul08 Jun 2009

Hundreds of people from across the Midwest and beyond attended the Bash Back! Convergence in Chicago May 28-31. Although reactions to the convergence vary greatly, agreement can be reached on one thing: Saturday night ended in what can only be characterized as an anti-queer police riot. After exiting a dance party at the Belmont el station, the crowd of over 100 soon came under attack from charging police cruisers. No dispersal order was given, but officers soon charged the crowd with batons and fists flailing. When it was over, four people were arrested and several hospitalized. With an international reputation of homophobia and brutality directed at queer and transfolk, the Chicago Police Department may be now be looking at yet another civil suit in the near future.

TCIMC is looking for more accounts from the convergence in Chicago. If you have something to share, please publish it [LINK] (and we'll post a link here), or contact us [LINK]. Thanks!

From Stone Wall on: Going back to go Forward The Childhood of the Revolution

Portland05 Jun 2009
It is indeed hard to escape it. Though the mainstream "straight" media pays it no heed, the gay media is abuzz. This summer marks the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. What makes Stonewall significant? Was it the first queer voice of the modern era? Certainly not, during the Weidar republic there had been a brief shining moment when significant strides had been made in the city of Berlin (this of course ended very badly, the rise of Adolf Hitler changed the cities "civil union" registry an easy way to identify, locate and round-up large numbers of what was the first modern queer rights movement. Though some fled and even a few waited out the war in hiding in Germany itself (for example the DaDa artist Hannah Hoch). It wasn't even the first time that the subject of gay rights had been advocated. The sisters of Bolita, and the matachine society had been "respectably" (and with all due respect to the immense bravery of those early advocates) quite ignorably picoting in DC, and doing the "letter writing" thing. No, what made Stonewall special, what makes it the Day we remember was that it was the day when queers not only advocated for their rights but refused the model of hetero-superiority. Rather than try to persuade the "big America" that they were deserving of human rights, the Queers of Stonewall stood up to the Cops in the streets of New York and REFUSED to be anything less than human.

"The Mormons are Coming, the Jews are Coming!"

A reflection on means and ends.

The bigoted ads [against Proposition 8] were placed on newspaper Web sites in three Eastern states last month — by "Californians Against Hate"!! The ad was rejected by the Kennebec Journal in Maine, which said that the copy "borders on insulting and denigrating a whole set of people based on their religion." Right on, Kennebec Journal!

California Court Upholds Prop 8; Thousands Take to the Streets in Response

IMC-US01 Jun 2009
At 10am on Tuesday May 26th, in a 6-1 decision, the California Supreme Court's ruled in favor of Proposition 8 banning future same-sex marriages but upholding existing same-sex marriages. In the one dissenting opinion, Judge Moreno stated "This could not have been the intent of those who devised and enacted the initiative process. In my view, the aim of Proposition 8 and all similar initiative measures that seek to alter the California Constitution to deny a fundamental right to a group that has historically been subject to discrimination on the basis of a suspect classification, violates the essence of the equal protection clause of the California Constitution and fundamentally alters its scope and meaning."

Demonstrators took to the streets in response, drawing thousands to cities across California and elsewhere in the nation. Coverage from CA: Los Angeles & San Diego | Central CA & San Francisco Bay Area | | | Solidarity Protest Coverage: Washington, DC | Seattle, WA | Rochester, NY

Following the verdict, a rally for national LGBT equality was held on Saturday, May 30. The campaign was designated as "Meet in the Middle for Equality" and began with a symbolic march from Selma, CA to the steps of City Hall in downtown Fresno (see photo). Read More

Marriage Equality and the Struggle for Civil Rights

San Francisco Bay Area31 May 2009
Thousands of marriage equality activists came to Fresno from throughout the state to protest the Supreme Court decision on proposition 8. A 15 mile march for civil rights by about 100 marriage equality activists who walked in the scorching valley heat from Selma to Fresno started the day. About 3,000 people were waiting for them when they arrived at Fresno City Hall. Organizers of today's Meet in the Middle rally chose Fresno because of the need to shift public opinion in the Central Valley on the marriage equality issue. Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, won by a wide margin in Fresno and other valley towns.
